From Farm to Brand: The Untapped Marketing Opportunity in Indian Agribusiness

When we think about agriculture, we often think about production. When we think about marketing, we usually think about brands, advertising and consumers.

But

what happens when these two worlds meet?

India's agricultural ecosystem is not only about producing crops; it is also about how agricultural products move through markets and create value before reaching the consumer. This creates an interesting opportunity for marketing.

An agricultural product can be sold primarily as a commodity, or it can be developed into a differentiated market offering through quality, packaging, positioning, storytelling and consumer trust.

This is where the journey from farm to brand becomes important.

One development worth noting is the growth of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs). In August 2026, the Government of India reported that 10,000 FPOs had been formed under the Central Sector Scheme for Formation and Promotion of 10,000 FPOs. These organisations are engaged in activities including aggregation, procurement, value addition and marketing of agricultural produce.

For marketers, this raises an important question: how can agricultural products move beyond being simply available in the market to becoming more differentiated and recognisable?

Consumer understanding becomes important here. What does the customer value? Does the product have a clear identity? Can its quality or origin be communicated effectively? Can packaging, storytelling and consistent positioning help create trust?

Technology can support this process. APEDA's Farmer Connect platform provides a digital interface connecting FPOs, Farmer Producer Companies and cooperatives with exporters. Producers can create profiles and post sell offers, while exporters can post enquiries and identify matching offers.

This shows that the connection between producers and markets is already becoming more technology-enabled. The next opportunity is to think about how marketing can add further value to that connection.

For me, this changes the way agribusiness can be viewed.

The opportunity is not only about producing more agricultural goods. It is also about creating more value around what is already being produced.

Marketing can contribute by connecting producers with consumer needs, developing differentiated offerings, strengthening brand identity and identifying new market opportunities.

India's agricultural story has traditionally been discussed through the lens of production. Looking at it through the lens of consumers, value and brands opens another perspective.

The journey from farm to brand could therefore become an important area of opportunity for the future of Indian agribusiness.
